When you buy fish and hermit crabs at petco do you need your parents to come in?
Q. Im planning on going into petco and buying some hermit crabs and some fish. Will petco let me buy the stuff with out my mom with me? Is there a certain age you have to be to buy fish and hermit crabs with out your parents? Will I have to Sign for the stuff? Im also going to buying 2 african dwarf frogs. Why can't you buy hermit Crabs yourself?

A. ive worked at a petco for about 4 years, and as far as it is stated in the petco rules, you must be 18 to buy any "companion" animal for any purpose. I believe you can buy crickets, fruit flies, mealworms, etc without a parent but anything else you need to be 18 or be with someone that is 18 or older. If you find a petco that will sell you african dwarf frogs, or any other companion animal without someone that is 18 they can get in a lot of trouble. we have an agreement with PETA that says we will ensure that all animals go to loving caring and responsible pet owners and if they are selling them to underage kids a lot of those pets are going to be neglected and abused. Of course abuse and neglect happens with people older than 18, but… [cont.]

How do I know if my hermit crab is pregnant?
Q. My Hermit Crab has been acting really weird since we got home! I'm wondering if she is pregnant because since about 3 days ago she's been with other hermit crabs. Well wat do you think?
Asked by cutiealwaysworks - Fri May 23 19:07:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The chances of your crab being pregnant are a zillion to one. She would have eggs and want to lay them in water. Hermit crabs as a rule d not mate in captivity. Some experienced crabbers have had their crabs mate but the offspring do not survive. She's probably just destressing. She's getting settled in to her new habitat. Keep the humidity and temp where they should be, fresh food, salt and fresh water, and some hermy friends and she'll be fine.

How do hermit crabs survive when kept as pets with no water?
Q. As a kid I had two hermit crabs. They lived for about a year before I found them out of their shells, dead, on the same day. Of course they had a dish of freshwater, and were fed hermit crab food, but I thought they had gills? How did they survive?
Asked by poor_choice - Mon Aug 18 23:59:05 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They have modified gills that allow them to breath moisture in the air. this is why land hermit crabs need high humidity. They can survive if kept in proper conditions.

How do you get a hermit crab out of its shell?
Q. We're in Florida and I have found some really nice shells, but they have hermit crabs in them!! I don't want to kill the crabs, but would really like the shell, any advice?
Asked by dstrbd4godsmack - Thu Jul 17 13:20:16 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. you are not going to be able to coax or pull the crab out of its shell. The shell is its lifeline and it will literally be ripped in half before he gives up the shell. Leave him alone.

What creates the shells that hermit crabs live in?
Q. I've never wondered this before but it seems such an obvious question. Are they capable of creating their own shells? If not, what other organism creates it, and why do they discard it? And what came first? The shell-creating organism, or the hermit crab? I know they're capable of living without it. I just want to know what creates it. It's not an exoskeleton. They inhabit a shell for a short time and then crawl to a larger shell after they shed their exoskeleton and become larger. Snails! Of course, thank you!
Asked by Khrysty - Tue Feb 24 01:25:39 2009 - - 11 Answers - 1 Comments

A. They find discarded shells from other creatures like mollusks and move in to them.

How much would it cost to buy a hermit crab and its required supplies?
Q. Such as its tank, food, etc. and most importantly the hermit crab itself. How long do they live for? Are hermit crabs very good pets?
Asked by Laurie - Thu Apr 19 15:55:26 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely go to . For the tank, I'd use at least a 10 gallon, which is about $10. The bigger you can afford, the better. Also I highly recommend an under tank heater, which is generally between $10-20 (for the ten gallon size). Then you can get normal sand for pretty cheap from a hardware store, but I'd also buy either Calci-sand or some cuttlebone (in the bird section). Cuttlebone is really cheap. They'll need the extra calcium and minerals when they molt. And yes, even though they're called "hermit", they would very much enjoy the company of others. They're nocturnal so they like hiding spots for the daytime, too. They like to climb--in the wild they will climb trees! And last but not least, for now, they like high humidity ( [cont.]

What are ways to give hermit crab heat and humidity?
Q. Can you guys give me a list of ways to give hermit crabs their needed heata and humidity? I don't have any yet (I'm doing my research before I get them)... but I'm planning on getting two or three small land crabs for a 10 gallon aquarium.
Asked by jedimasterdanix - Sun Oct 5 14:28:46 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you start out with a glass aquarium and have a glass or plexi glass lid that helps a lot in terms of keeping humidity high. a temperature gage and humidity gage is important 70f-80f for temp. and 70%-80% for humidity. I use half sand and half coconut fiber. spraying coconut fiber with hermit crab safe water helps boost humidity. sponges do not work. do not bother with sponges at all they're a waste. for heating a 10 gallon an under tank heat pad should do the trick. It will also boost the humidity.

Adding Aquarium salt to Hermit crabs water?
Q. I have just bought Aquarium salt for my hermit crab, its made by the ATI brand and it's salt crystals and it's 454g. Anyway I am planning on making two bottles, 1 for his freshwater and the 2nd for his saltwater. What I need to know is how much salt to add to my saltwater solution per litre of water. Anyway Hermit onwers know how much they add per litre? Thanks.
Asked by Jack D - Sun Jul 13 16:01:10 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For hermits, you should really use marine salt rather than aquarium salt. There are more minerals in the sea sat that your hermit will use. For the amount, you want it mixed to full marine strength, or a specific gravity of 1.024-1.026. The best way to measure this is with a hydrometer since that measures the concentration as it occurs in the water. If you try to use a volume (cups, spoonfuls) the salt absorbs moisture and compacts over time, so the salinity won't be consistent.

Can a hermit crab get stuck in its shell?
Q. It looks like my one hermit crab is straining to get out of its shell.
Asked by mjg801 - Sat Mar 29 01:38:24 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, they can get stuck in their shell. Is the crab able to move his legs and pinchers, or does it look like his body is stuck inside the shell? Sometimes they can get stuck to the paint inside of painted shells. There is not much that can be done to free the crab, but it has been done. Here's a link to an article that could help you, this person bought a crab that was stuck inside of a shell and managed to free them by slowly chipping away enough of the shell with nail clippers: Whatever you do though, do not try to crack the shell or pull him out by force, because that will cause him more stress; a hermit crab would rather be ripped apart than let go of the shell, because there is a possibility that he may not actually be stuck.

Can I put hermit crabs I found in the ocean in my 125gal saltwater tank?

A. They will drown you need to take them out. Hermit crabs need to live in a different tank with either rocks or sand and just a small bowl of water that they can climb easily out of. you should keep small piece of sea sponge in there with the water so i does not get too deep. please take them out!

How long is the period between transportation of hermit crab shells?
Q. How long does it take for a hermit crab to change shells? Have two, never had them before so I have no idea. Please help.
Asked by ke sey<3 - Tue Sep 5 20:09:11 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the crab. Sometimes, they will change often. I have one who for a long time changed shells daily, until she finally settled on one she likes. She hasn't changed since. More often than not, though, they won't change shells unless they are outgrowing one, or getting too large for it. When they molt, they actually shrink for a while, too, so they might transfer to a smaller shell. Make sure the shells you have are size appropriate to the crabs. You should have at least 3 per crab- 1 smaller, 1 the same size, and 1 bigger. Don't toss any that someone has already used. Just clean it with dechlorinated water, and put it back in.

Why is my hermit crab ripping apart his sponge?
Q. I have a sea sponge that I keep moist in the tank, to keep it humid and if they want to suck the water from it, but my hermit crab keeps ripping it apart. Today there were about 15 little pieces of the sponge in the tank, and my sponge has managed to shrink down to about in inch. Is this behavior normal? And why in the world is he doing it?
Asked by Lyn - Mon Mar 10 02:13:32 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. hermit crabs will eat sea sponge. some of them love it. So that is likely why he is ripping it to shreds. If it becomes a problem I find spraying the substrate works well for keeping humidity high. Or if you add safe moss or coconut fibre it bumps up humidity.

Can I use fish tank water conditioner for my hermit crabs drinking/spray water?
Q. I can't seem to find my hermit crab water conditioner, but I've got this big bottle of fish tank conditioner. Is it basically the same stuff or should I hold off until I can get to the pet store again? They make hermit crab water conditioner but it's like 4 times the price as aquarium conditioner. Yup, I have the salt water, too. Thanks!
Asked by Zombie Cat - Sun Mar 2 22:32:12 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes you can. As long as it doesn't stimulate slime coat. I have yet to see a product made just for hermit crabs. But most products make " Just for hermit crabs" are usually really bad for them. I use a Doc Wellfish product. as long as it removes chlorine and heavy metals it should be fine. make sure you have fresh and salt water too. most pet stores sell aquarium salt. Edit: If it is more expensive then the fish or reptile conditioners use the cheaper one. They are all the same just make sure they are not specialized for fish scales, reptile scales or shedding animals. happy crabbing

How do I know if my hermit crab is just molting or died?
Q. I have had two hermit crabs die in the past month. I think the first one was handled too much; fell a couple of times. We went and bought two more at the pet store. The one hermit crab seemed less active eventually stopped climbing and slowed down quite a bit dragging his legs. I am assuming he died as he stopped moving all together and fell out of his shell. He never dug under the sand; just liked to climb. The other crab seemed attached to him and would often be by his side; he even was there with him when he died. Now, the living one must have buried himself in the sand which he never did before. Could he be sad? The tank temp is between 75-85 and the humidity about 75%. We also provide spring water and conditioned ocean water… [cont.]

A. When they fall out of their shell, that means they're dead. :( Sorry. One thing you should do is fill up a squirt bottle with water and squirt it on their shells. It helps cool them down and keep them moist.

A. Hermit crabs, depending on the size you get vary in price from $6 - 35 AUD. The costs that are going to be the most for you are the tank for them to live in and the heat source and hygrometer and thermometer. As the other respondent was saying hermitcrabparadise.com is a good starting site. The webmaster is an aussie himself. Another site I recommend is crabstreetjournal.com Run by hermit crab owners world wide they will be able to help you with care issues also. I am also an Aussie, I have had hermit crabs for about 5 years, I started with two and now have 4 tanks with over 40 crabs. I just love them. I adopt from people who are unable to care for them.

Q. Since hermit crabs can't be left alone and always need to have a companion, I'll always have to find a replacement crab when one dies. Am I going to be stuck caring for these hermit crabs until I die?
Asked by shouldimf - Mon May 26 18:29:14 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They do need to live in colonies, companionship is essential to good health. Groups of 3 or more are best. Land hermit crabs can live for decades when properly cared for. I've had many of mine for 4 years and I hope to have them for many more. If you really don't want to commit to land hermit crabs for at least 10 years, I suggest rehoming them.

A. You can use anything that might keep reptiles warm. I suggest a heating pad that sticks to the outside of the tank, but you could also use a basking light with a low wattage. They don't need to be kept too hot. Good luck!
